ANA National Awards

Posted about 1 year ago

ANA joined the World Health Organization and other global colleagues in extending the Year of the Nurse into 2021, which builds on the increased visibility of nurses' contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.   The importance and contributions of nurses and the profession of nursing to the delivery of high-quality and compassionate health care has never been more visible.

Every day in countless ways, nurses create history.  Our professional past is rich with stories of nurses who, through their work or advocacy efforts, changed the trajectory of the profession.  Now, more than ever, we need to tell the stories of nurses among us who are creating and leading change.  I invite you to take this opportunity to recognize the outstanding contributions of a nursing colleague by nominating them for an ANA National Award.

As you review the National Awards Program Guide for descriptions, eligibility requirements, and selection criteria for each award, think of the nurses you know or know of who best exemplify the awards.  Then - and this is the most important step of all - submit a nomination.  To assist you in the process, the National Awards Program Guide provides an overview of the nomination submission and review processes, including a step-by-step tutorial and a detailed timeline.

By nominating a deserving colleague for an ANA National Award, you will ensure that the stories detailing the accomplishments of those who illustrate nursing excellence are told and celebrated.  There is no better time than now to promote nursing's contributions in the delivery of high-quality healthcare.

Changes to ANA National Awards

Earlier this year, the ANA Board of Directors:

  • reinstated two former named awards – Luther Christman Award and Mary Mahoney Award  –  given the contributions of these two individuals to removing barriers and advancing a culture of equity and inclusion in the profession of nursing; and

  • approved a proposal for a new Early Career Nurse Leader Award to recognize significant accomplishments and contributions by emerging members of the nursing profession.

Nominations must be submitted by 5:00pm ET on Friday, October 1, 2021. If you have any questions, please send an email to
